5 SPRING FLOWERS I WOULD RECOMMEND AS A FLORIST
Every time I sit and chat to my couples we discuss chosen or wanted flowers along with recommendations I suggest for their chosen floral season. Spring, I believe, doesn’t get enough of a shout out considering the stunning florals available. Every time a spring wedding drops into my inbox I give a little excited ‘yippeee!’ as I get to use and sometimes introduce, flowers to my couples which are fabulous in colour, shape and form. When you’re having a spring wedding you really do want your wedding florals to scream (joyfully!) spring!
This was really hard to narrow down 5 to recommend, as there are so many spring flowers which are not only stunning but wonderful to use in floral displays as they last so well.
Whether it’s my mentality or I am a lone solider on this, I think Spring flowers have more oomph about them. They’ve suffered through winter, slowly rising and the sun appears, it becomes slightly warmer (won’t get too excited about the warmth as we live in the UK) and these little beauties shine bright bringing cheer and joy to whoever sees them.
Below are my top 5, which I always recommend to couples who are having a spring wedding.
1. NARCISSUS
I mean how could I not? Perfectly perfumed and stunning in any arrangement. Symbolising; hope, wealth and good fortune for the new year which is a great addition to any arrangement, especially if you like your florals to have a meaning. They are little stunners to use and they have a long shelf-life if treated correctly. I grow them in abundance and seeing them pop all over the garden and in pots gives the lift I need with my morning coffee this time of year. My favourite are paper whites as they having delicate little heads and are a pure white.
2. RANUNCULUS
Butterfly or buttercup ranunculus are another firm favourite. To me they are just as beautiful as a rose. Lots of petals to fluff and they have a stunning curvature and movement, which as florist I am a big fan of.
A perfect spring floral, which is always very popular and you can see the reason why.
They come in so many colours this is a spring wedding must floral!
3. Lilac
Lilac is often forgotten about but she is beautiful. The tiny flower heads pack a stunning perfume punch in bouquets and displays and a few sprigs is usually just the right amount to add variety and elegance. Lots of pastel and strong colours to choose from, usually from white to pinks and purple I love them in a spring floral schemes.
4. Tulips
I know some people are very mixed on tulips but there are so many varieties; Parrot, Darwin, Triumph, Double, Fringed and Fosterinana - the list goes on and not to mention how many colours you can get! From pastel to bright to two-tone, if a tulip doesn’t define spring has really sprung I’m not sure what does. Beautiful either left alone or as we florists say ‘reflexed’ tulips are incredibly versatile and long lasting. Their meaning is happiness, love, joy, good luck, and well wishes- a wonderful addition to any spring wedding with meaning.
5. Hellebores
Last but by no means least, Hellebores. Oh how stunning they are. As you can tell I love all flowers but these gems are so graceful. Standing tall and one of the first of Spring flowers to bloom, sometimes varieties starting out in winter. I adore growing and using them. They come in; green, white, pink or ruby. Some or solo headed and other double with frilly edges and two tone petals. If you are a lover of wild and whimsical I believe these beauties should definitely be in your flower love list. They look perfectly in place either used as a filler or a focal flower in bouquets or large displays.
I hope this helps any couple thinking of what floral choices are available to you, if you are having a Spring wedding. Remember to be open to your florists suggestions and you can always ask for examples and options if you want other flowers, which I haven’t mentioned here.
Choosing your flowers is a big deal as your wedding florals are not inexpensive and they should make an everlasting impression on you and your guests. They will be photographed and become treasured keepsakes so you don’t want to feel disappointed or let down that they you didn’t know what was available to you.
